Stand up for Peace

Bright orange red was the midnight sky. Beams of search lights probed up high. Anti aircraft guns were firing. Dull roaring bombers were dropping deadly ordinances around floating target markers. Down the street, a burning cathedral with a bomb shelter basement was collapsing. Parts of our neighborhood were in flames and thick smoke. The once huge hospital not far behind our house lay in ruins.

Normally in the bunker, I was outside — terrified, awestruck, afraid, yet defiant, even at the age of 5. I saw the horror of destruction, felt the earth trembling, smelled the ruins burning and tasted death in the air. There I stood before my personal Armageddon, absorbing images I wanted to block out of my mind, if I could. My soul was yearning to withdraw to the safety of its source.

I told this, my story, to a Jewish professor who was working on a holocaust paper. We happened to be sitting next to each other at the breakfast bar in a Pennsylvania truck stop off I-80. “You had your own holocaust,” he said and bought me breakfast. Afterwards, I thought and contemplated his remark. At a very young age I was introduced to hell and I survived, because I had much more to learn.

After all, this life is just a school house. People ask: How could God let this happen? Wrong question! How could we let this happen?! Think of death and horror in Iraq . We let it happen. We elected President Bush, twice! Oh, but we didn’t know, you might say. Actually, we failed to look for the truth. We were lazy, distracted and preoccupied with material stuff, borrowing money we could not pay back, trying to get rich in real estate, stocks, and internet ventures. Now that Obama is at the helm, we are sinking further into debt and our living standard is suffering.

The big awakening has caught up with us. I don’t need to repeat here what you see in the news every day. Read the blogs, including the ones I have listed under LINKS.

We are over $10 trillion in national debt, have spread our real estate credit crisis to the global financial markets, continue to fight wars we can't afford, and continue to lose influence around the globe. To sum it up, the era of US Imperialism is ending. It’s time to bring home the troops from Iraq, from Japan, from Korea, from Germany, from Britain, and from other places around this planet.

No more wars or cold wars, I plead! Let’s not build anti-missal sites in Eastern Europe and risk a Russian response in Cuba. Let's not provoke terrorists to attack us, certainly not with WMDs. I dread to see the kind of horror again that I witnessed as a 5-yr old. Vote for peace, I ask. Our country needs enduring peace.
